BIOGRAPHY
Habiburrahman
El-Shirazy was born in September 30th, 1976 in Semarang, Central
Java. He is 34 years old. He graduated from Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt.
He is known as a dai, novelist, and poet. His works are liked not only in
Indonesia, but also in neighboring countries like Malaysia, Singapore and
Brunei. His fictional works can build soul and grow the spirit of the readers.
Among his works that have been circulating in the market is Ayat-Ayat Cinta, Di
Atas Sajadah Cinta, Ketika Cinta Bertasbih, etc.
He studied in
MTs Futuhiyyah 1 Mranggen. In 1992 he migrated to Surakarta to study at
Madrasah Aliyah Special Program in Surakarta. He graduated in 1995. After that,
he continued his intellectual odyssey into Ushuluddin Faculty, Department of
Hadist Al-Azhar University, Cairo and completed in 1999. In 2001, he graduated
from Postgraduate Diploma (Pg.D) at The Institute for Islamic Studies in Cairo.
SUMMARY
Ayat – Ayat
Cinta is a religious romantic story. It is about an Indonesian, a muslim man
who studies abroad at Cairo, Egypt. The story of a virtuous muslim who
overcomes all obstacles of life. Fahri bin Abdillah is a poor,but he is
intelligent student who wins a scholarship to complete his graduate degree at
Egypt's esteemed Al Azhar University. Very disciplined and dedicated by nature,
Fahri embraces his life in Cairo, completing his studies and translation of
religious books with full enthusiasm. Only one goal is left, it is the pursuit
of marriage. Beside that, there are other characters. They are Maria Girgis,
Aisha, Nurul and Naora. Maria Girgis is an Egyptian girl. She is a shy woman
and open-minded Coptic Christian neighbor as well as Fahri's best friend. She
is attracted to teach the Holy Quran. She finds herself falling in love with
Fahri (a fact she only reveals to her diary). Aisha, a German-Turkish student
in Cairo who haunts Fahri with her beautiful eyes. Following an incident on the
metro where Fahri defends her, against narrow minded bigoted Muslims. Both
immediately develop their feelings for each other. Aisha comes from a rich
family. Nurul, an Indonesian student at Al Azhar who likes Fahri is a muslim
daughter of a renowned cleric from Indonesia. Fahri feels unworthy of her. He ignores
his feeling for her, leaving her confused and guessing. Noura, an abused
Egyptian neighbor, develops strong romantic feelings for Fahri who in turn
simply sympathizes with her situation. His romantic rejection destroys her and
eventually leads to a false accusation of rape to Fahri. On the other hand,
Fahri married Aisha. But Noura accused him of raping her. Of course it is a
false accusation. Fahri is thrown to jail. After Maria knew Fahri got married,
she was in stress and losing hope of life. Then, she got an accident. It caused
her in a coma condition at the hospital. Actually, she is the only one who can
give a testimony that can make Fahri free from the rape accusation. To give her
a hope of life, as well as to free Fahri from the accusation, Aisha insisted
Fahri to take Maria as his second wife. Fahri refused at first, but Maria's
condition was critical and she kept calling his name. Fahri finally agreed.
Maria testified at the court and Fahri is freed from jail. Maria's condition
got better only for a while. She becomes a Muslim, and she passed away soon
after.
The story in this movie told us about Aisha who sacrifices his love to let Fahri married Maria. A wonderful love from a woman.

THE CHARACTERS

Fahri is a careless
person, he was a mature guy with great understanding of his self
responsibility, had all his things planned well, and always ready for every
task he had.

Aisha is calm, polite,
and wise. She is also an intelligent woman.

Nurul is a kind,
polite and intelligent girl. She loved fahri but not crazy about him.
·
Noura is a wicked
and sly girl. She was crazy because her love. So, she makes a false accusation
of rape to Fahri.
