SIMPLE PAST TENSE

Application:
1. The Simple Past indicates that an activity or situation began and ended at a particular time in the
past. Examples:
a. Maria
did her work last night.
b. I
bought a new car three days ago.
2. If a sentence contains when
and has The Simple Past in both clauses, the action in the “when clause” happen first. Examples:
- When she heard a strange noise, she got up to investigate.
1st : She got up to investigate.
2nd :
She heard a strange noise.
- I slept in my room when she watched TV.
1st : She watched TV.
2nd : I
slept in my room.
PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
(PAST PROGRESSIVE TENSE)

Application :
1.
Past Continuous Tense says both actions occurred at the
same time, but one action began
earlier and was in progress when the other action occurred.

Examples
:
a.
The engine was
running when it suddenly stopped.
b.
When John came home, George was watching television.
2.
Past Continuous Tense is used in both parts of a
sentence when two actions are in progress simultaneously.

Examples :
a. Clara
was watching television while Sophie was reading a novel.
b. While
Stephanie was cooking a cake, Michael
was playing guitar.
Or use this
pattern:

Example :
a. While
Sandra was playing badminton her
mother went to market.
*The Simple Past and The Past Progressive give almost the same meaning.

Past Continuous says about an action progress at that
time, and probably continued.
Examples :
a. Marcell
was studying at 7 last night.
b. Last
year at this time, I was going to Bali.
4.
Stative verb is not used in this tense.
PAST PERFECT TENSE

Application:
1. The Past Perfect expresses an activity that was completed before another activity or time in the past. Examples:
a.
My parents had
already eaten by the time I got
home.
b.
Until yesterday, I had
never heard about it.
2. If either before or after is used the sentence, The Past
Perfect is often not necessary because the time relationship is already
clear.The Simple Past may be used. Examples:
a.
After the guest had left, I went to bed. Both of them have
b.
After the guest left,
I went to bed same meaning.

gone to the store before she went home.
Ø
Sam had
left before we got there.

Before Teddy went to campus, he had had his breakfast.

After Betty had

PAST PERFECT
CONTINUOUS TENSE

Application:
1. The Past Perfect Progressive/ Continuous emphasizes the duration of an activity that was in progress before another activity or time in
the past. Examples:
- He finally came at six o’clock.I had been waiting for him since four-thirty.
- The police had been looking for the criminal for two years before they caught him.
2. This tense also may express an activity in progress recent to another time or activity in the past.
Examples:
- Her eyes were red because she had been crying.
- When Judy got home, her hair was still wet because she had been swimming.
